This course is designed to impart basic knowledge on etiopathogenesis of common diseases and their management along with quality use of medicines. Pharmacotherapeutics (PT) is the application of pharmacological information together with the knowledge of the disease for its prevention, mitigation or cure. Pharmacotherapeutics refers to the use of drugs to prevent, treat, and diagnose disease as well as to alter normal functions (such as preventing pregnancy). Pharmacotherapeutics correlates pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics with the microbiologic or biochemical aspects of disease.

 

The major role of community pharmacist is to dispense medications safely, accurately and in accordance with the pertinent laws, upon receipt of a legal prescription. This most important professional activity is concerned with receiving, handling and dispensing pharmaceutical products in conformity with the intentions of a licensed medical practitioner Since the sale of prescribed medications is regulated and carefully monitored, the pharmacist must always be aware of the responsibilities when he/she accepts a prescription for dispensing. The prescription order represents a professional relationship between the prescriber, pharmacist and patient. It is the pharmacist's responsibility in this relationship to serve the medication needs of the patient according to the intent of the prescriber. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to understand the scope and responsibility of community pharmacy, know the contribution of pharmacist in acquisition, control, distribution and rational use of drug. Appreciate the patient centered health related function of community pharmacist.
